13 Stripes and 15 Stars

The first official American flag, designed by Betsy Ross, featured 13 stripes representing the thirteen colonies and 15 stars representing the thirteen states that had ratified the Articles of Confederation. This flag was first flown on January 1, 1777, and was used throughout the Revolutionary War.

15 Stripes and 15 Stars

In 1795, when Vermont and Kentucky joined the Union, the flag was redesigned to include 15 stripes and 15 stars. This flag remained in use until 1814, when it was replaced by the current design.

The Current Design

In 1814, President James Monroe approved a new design for the American flag that has remained unchanged ever since. This design consists of 13 alternating stripes of red and white, representing the thirteen original colonies, and a blue canton with 50 white stars, representing the 50 states of the Union. The canton is placed in the upper left corner of the flag, and the stars are arranged in nine rows of six stars each, with an additional star in the center of the canton.
