Missouri Defense Shares Preseason Thoughts on Coordinator Blake Baker
Batoon Expects Defense to Improve in 2023
Missouri defensive coordinator Blake Baker anticipates significant defensive improvement in 2023, despite losing several key players from last season's squad.
Defensive Line Eager to Prove Themselves
With the departure of All-SEC defensive end Isaiah McGuire, the defensive line is eager to step up and fill the void. Junior defensive end DJ Coleman, a rising star, is expected to lead the charge.
Baker expressed confidence in the unit's potential: "Our defensive line has been working hard all offseason. They're hungry to prove themselves and I believe they have the talent to be one of the best in the SEC."
Linebackers Look to Make a Statement
The linebacker corps returns several experienced players, including senior Chad Bailey and junior Tre Williams. Baker expects them to make a significant impact in 2023.
Bailey stated: "We have a lot of talent and experience in our linebacker group. We're ready to take the next step and be a dominant force on defense."
Secondary Aiming for Consistency
The secondary lost several key players from last season, but Baker is confident in the unit's ability to improve. Senior safety Jaylon Carlies and junior cornerback Ennis Rakestraw will be key leaders.
"Our secondary is young but talented. They have been working hard all offseason and I expect them to be much more consistent in 2023," Baker said.
Overall Team Defense Outlook
Baker believes that the Missouri defense has the potential to be one of the best in the SEC in 2023. The unit is eager to prove themselves and make a statement.
"We have a lot of talent and experience on this defense. I believe we can be one of the best in the conference. We're excited for the season to start and show everyone what we can do," Baker concluded.
